SAUSD Takes a Strong Step Toward Student Workforce Readiness

The Santa Ana Unified School District is making a meaningful investment in the future of our local workforce. The SAUSD Board of Education recently approved a resolution proclaiming April 28 through May 1, 2026, as Workplace Readiness Week, a focused initiative designed to prepare high school students for the realities of entering the job market.
The resolution aligns with California Assembly Bill 800 and directs the district to provide structured education on workplace protections, labor laws, wage and hour standards, workers' compensation, and safe working conditions. Students will receive this instruction prior to obtaining work permits, giving them a solid foundation before they step into their first professional roles.
For the business community here in Santa Ana, this is good news. When young workers arrive informed and prepared, the entire hiring and onboarding experience becomes smoother for employers. Students who understand workplace expectations, their rights, and their responsibilities are better equipped to show up professionally and contribute from day one. Board Vice President Hector Bustos noted that the initiative goes beyond academic preparation. "As more of our students enter the workforce while still in school, it is essential that they understand their rights, know how to advocate for themselves, and are equipped with the knowledge needed to succeed in safe and supportive work environments."
Board Member Valerie Magdaleno highlighted the equity component of the effort, emphasizing that informed students are better positioned to make sound decisions and develop the professional skills that lead to long-term career success. Implementation will involve collaboration across SAUSD's Teaching and Learning Department, Career Education programs, and Workforce Innovation teams. The district also plans professional development for educators and will expand access to student-friendly, multilingual resources across secondary campuses.
This kind of partnership between our school district and the local business community reflects the shared goal of building a workforce pipeline right here in Santa Ana. Chamber members who are interested in engaging with youth workforce programs or exploring internship and mentorship opportunities are encouraged to connect with the Chamber office.
