Santa Ana Businesses Encouraged to Follow Comprehensive Zoning Code Update
Thursday, July 16, 2026
The City of Santa Ana is moving forward with a comprehensive update of the rules that govern how property may be used and developed throughout the city.
Because zoning decisions can affect business operations, commercial property, industrial areas, redevelopment, expansion plans, parking, signage, and permitting, local businesses should understand the proposed changes and participate in the public process.
Santa Ana’s current Zoning Code was last comprehensively updated in the 1960s. The City is now working to modernize the code, respond to current state laws and development practices, improve its clarity, and implement the community vision established in Santa Ana’s General Plan.
The Zoning Code determines which land uses are permitted in different areas of the city and establishes standards for development. The update may influence how commercial and industrial districts evolve, how new projects are reviewed, and how conflicts between businesses, residential neighborhoods, and other sensitive land uses are addressed.

Why Business Participation Matters
Zoning policies can have long-term consequences for business owners, commercial property owners, developers, employers, and investors. Changes to permitted uses or development standards may affect whether a company can open, expand, relocate, renovate a property, add signage, provide parking, or obtain necessary approvals.
Businesses may also have practical experience with existing regulations that City staff and decision-makers should consider. Examples may include lengthy approval processes, outdated restrictions, incompatible neighboring uses, limited expansion opportunities, or standards that do not reflect how modern businesses operate.
The study sessions provide an opportunity for the business community to learn more about the proposed changes and ensure that Santa Ana’s future zoning regulations support responsible development, employment opportunities, private investment, and a strong local economy.
Business owners and property owners should review the City’s draft materials, identify regulations that may affect their properties or operations, and provide comments while the update remains under consideration.
Information and meeting details are provided by the City of Santa Ana. Businesses should consult the City’s official project webpage for updated materials, agendas, participation instructions, and any scheduling changes.
