It's About The Kids
In 2007, I was out having dinner with my wife and neighbors at a local restaurant when Kim’s phone rang, and a police officer was on the other end of the phone. He had pulled over Kim’s daughter Kristina, who was 17 years old at the time, and had obtained her driver’s license a month earlier. She was out driving with her friends in the car, which was illegal. The officer made all of the kids sit on the curb while he phoned their parents so they could come and pick them up.
This story had a happy ending, while many others don’t. One mistake could last a lifetime. According to statistics from the website of “The NationalTransportation Safety Board,” on that same day, and virtually every day since, five to seven teenagers died in road accidents across America. The parents of those teenagers had to face a very different outcome!
That was when I came up with the idea to engage this national problem head on. My idea was to find a way to help law enforcement officers identify teenagers who had a provisional license and were breaking the law by transporting their friends in their vehicle. My cousin was killed along with his high school friends many years ago while out driving on a Saturday night. He lost control of the vehicle and flipped over into a stream. These teenagers were only 16 years old.
